2026 August 1st Week Marginal News Recommendation - Expert interview: How to choose the right self-aligning bearing and insert bearing?

Self-aligning bearings are widely used in sectors such as agricultural machinery, conveyors, woodworking, packaging and the food industry. What is a self-aligning bearing? A self-aligning bearing consists of a ball insert bearing and a housing. The two components fit together easily thanks to the spherical shape of the bearing seat. The insert bearings can pivot to compensate for slight static misalignments of the drive shaft. Given this application, many questions arise regarding: how do you select the right configuration for your application? To help you understand this better, our marketing expert, Maxime Ducolombier from NTN Europe, offers his insights and answers six key questions. Why use a self-aligning bearing? Our expert: Thanks to its spherical housing, the self-aligning bearing naturally compensates for shaft misalignment and integrates easily into an installation for reliable operation and reduced maintenance. Self-aligning bearings are available in numerous combinations of housings, inserts and materials, such as cast iron, sheet metal, stainless steel or thermoplastic. This variety allows the bearing to be tailored to the specific requirements of each industrial application. Clamping screws, eccentric rings or clamping rings: how do you choose the right fastening system for the insert? Our expert: Your choice will depend mainly on: - the direction of rotation and speed - loads and vibration - maintenance requirements Clamping screws: UC / US series These consist of two clamping screws offset by 120°. This simple and compact solution is suitable for normal loads and low to medium speeds. The eccentric ring: EX / ES series In this case, clamping is achieved by an eccentric ring. This system is particularly recommended for applications with a constant direction of rotation and, conversely, is not at all suitable for alternating rotations. The clamping sleeve (adapter): UK / LK series This option with a tapered bore consists of a clamping ring, a locking washer and a clamping nut. It is ideally suited for higher speeds, alternating rotations and regular operation.
What is the difference between the ISO and JIS series? Our expert: Self-aligning bearings are available in two main standards: ISO 3228 and JIS B 1559. The dimensions are very similar, with only minor differences in the design of the bearing housings. The main difference lies in the position of the lubrication groove within the housing.
How does relubrication work for these two standards? Our expert: Most of the inserts we sell feature the G2 relubrication system, which is compatible with ISO and JIS bearing housings. Thanks to the specific arrangement of the lubrication holes in the outer ring, grease can be injected from two different positions. This enables particularly effective relubrication, easier maintenance and compatibility with ISO and JIS bearing housings.
Which inserts are recommended for highly polluted environments? Our expert: For harsh environments, such as agricultural applications, there are specific inserts available, such as the AGR inserts from SNR. These inserts offer particularly high performance for the user as the seal is reinforced by multiple lips, a reinforced steel deflector and the use of high-performance grease. This protection acts as a barrier against dust, mud and moisture. This design, combined with this specific grease, has a significant impact on the insert’s service life, which is considerably extended – a major advantage in this type of contaminated environment. What solutions are available for extreme temperatures? Our expert: We offer self-aligning bearings for high-temperature applications up to 200°C (SNR part numbers with the suffix T20) and for low-temperature applications down to -40°C (SNR part numbers with the suffix T04). These solutions use specific greases and adapt internal clearances to maintain the bearing’s performance despite these extreme conditions. In a nutshell? To choose the right self-aligning bearing for your application, you need to combine: - the correct insert mounting system - the correct standard (ISO / JIS) - the correct material - the solution suited to the environment (AGR, T20, T04…) By following these recommendations and thanks to our range of over 25,000 products, we are confident we can offer you the solution best suited to your industrial application. Expert quote: “Because every application is unique, at NTN Europe we have developed a combination of bearing housings, inserts and materials that now makes up the widest range of self-aligning bearings on the market”
